New town, new job, new work.

After a summer resetting my brain, and a tumultuous couple of August weeks, I've finally settled down in Elkhart, Indiana, where I'll spend the rest of the year shooting for The Elkhart Truth.

It's been pretty much non-stop since my first day, which is great because it doesn't leave me a lot of time to psyche myself out about getting back into the rhythm of a daily paper. Of course, there's some rust that comes with shock of a strange new community and a vastly different workflow. But that's starting to wear off now and the area is slowly becoming familiar.

Sports, spot news, a boxer with an Olympic gold medal. Here are some frames from my first couple of weeks here.

¡BĂ©isbol!

It's been baseball season for almost a month now, but heavy rains for most of that time kept the teams off the field. I finally got a chance to get out there and shoot earlier today, but in a peculiar situation.

Over the weekend, the championship game of a tournament got called off because it got too dark. They picked it up earlier this afternoon, with the score tied 5-5 in the 7th inning. It took until the top of the 12th inning to finally score a run, which stood as the game-winner. It was great to get thrust right into action after being away from the sport for so long.

Last Week(ish)

I've been real lazy about posting recently, which is (not) a shock. But I wanted to put up some pictures from the last week or so since things have started to pick up a little. These are taken from flood coverage, a protest against building a Walmart, a candlelight vigil for an unsolved murder, an anti-violence march through Muskegon/Muskegon Heights, and a Senior Prom. Enjoy.

A First for the Chronicle

This is the first lacrosse picture ever published in The Muskegon Chronicle. Or so I'm told.

Some Days: A Haiku

Some days the coffee
Just isn't quite hot enough.

Not Quite There Yet

Reeths-Puffer High School hockey had their best season in school history. They went 25-3-1 (including playoffs) and lifted their first regional trophy. You can read more about their season here. I followed them on their road to the state title, but unfortunately it wasn't a very long one.

After going down 5-2 in the state quarterfinal game, they clawed back to force overtime only to lose 43 seconds into the extra frame. A really deflating defeat and a crappy way to end the season after accomplishing so much. I plucked a few selects that I liked from my time with them. Enjoy.
